DEVELOPMENT OF MEASUREMENT TECHNOLOGIES AND DEVICE PROTOTYPES
The Measurement Technology Unit (MITY) of the University of Oulu has strong expertise and experience in the development of monitoring and measurement solutions based on electrochemistry, chemical sensors and biosensors, optical spectroscopy, and imaging.
MITY’s offering includes research in environmental measurements, expert services for optical and imaging measurement technology, development and testing of measurement, control and machine vision systems, and measurement technology for the paper and pulp industry and biorefining. The unit has versatile equipment and laboratories for developing and testing device prototypes in Kajaani.
In support of mechanical design, Kajaani University of Applied Sciences (KAMK) offers project assignments implemented in the form of student projects using modern 3D design software and simulation tools. KAMK also offers 3D printing services.

LABORATORY ANALYSES, EXTRACTIONS AND MEASUREMENTS
The University of Oulu’s Measurement Technology Unit (MITY) has a versatile research infrastructure in Kajaani. The main target areas of the unit’s operations are environmental measurement and process management in the mining, food and forest industries.
The unit’s services include laboratory analyses and measurements, cell cultures, microbial studies, food examination and biomass processing, as well as well-being-related measurements, such as stress and nutrition.
MITY also engages in diverse cooperation with companies in the cosmetics, natural products and food sectors. For these industry sectors, MITY provides analysis services, extraction and processing methods, and effectiveness-related services.
The Kajaani University of Applied Sciences (KAMK) laboratory environment for the rock and mining industry provides opportunities for materials research in the mining and process industries, among others, as well as for material classification that facilitates the utilisation of side streams.
KAMK also has a mobile laboratory environment for the mining industry. The laboratory is a versatile entity that companies can utilise in the classification of materials and in materials research, quality control, process development, and product development.

MEASUREMENT AND TESTING SERVICES FOR EXERCISE, SPORTS AND WELL-BEING
The laboratories of the Vuokatti unit of the University of Jyväskylä (JyU-Vuokatti) provide measurement conditions for conducting research related to elite sports and well-being alike.
The laboratories of the Sports Technology Unit can measure technological solutions as well as biomechanical and physiological strength and endurance characteristics.

METROLOGY SERVICES AND TRAINING
The VTT unit in Kajaani is part of VTT MIKES, which operates as Finland’s National Metrology Institute (NMI). VTT MIKES is responsible for the implementation of the international SI system of measurement units in Finland and for the development, maintenance and supervision of the national measurement standards system.
VTT offers the following services in Kajaani:
- Calibration services of the National Metrology Institute for force, torque, masses (20–2,000 kg) and fluid flows
- Research and development services related to the aforementioned measurement standards
- Development of the reliability and accuracy of measurement and testing equipment
- Calibration, expert and training services in metrology

VISUALISATION AND SERIOUS GAME APPLICATIONS
Kajaani University of Applied Sciences (KAMK) provides services for the development of simulators, health games, virtual environments, and educational games. Connecting different measuring devices and sensors to the game world enables the creation of new types of game environments.
KAMK helps industry operators utilise the data collected from the environment, equipment and processes by visualising it in an easy-to-view format, which helps companies in their decision-making. With the help of virtual reality, induction into safety matters, for example, is an efficient process.
KAMK also produces exergaming solutions that combine gaming technology with exercise, with the aim of developing motor skills and physical characteristics.

CSC provides services for utilising high-performance computing in, e.g., product development. In addition to utilising computing capacity, the range of services includes training and expert support.
CSC provides research organisations with versatile solutions and training in scientific computing, data management and analysis, and research management.

Modern data analytics provides companies with new business openings and a competitive advantage for their current business. The LUMI supercomputer located in Kajaani provides a boost for utilising huge masses of data faster and more efficiently.
The Aika ecosystem supports companies in enhancing their business with the help of data and in developing data-based innovations. The AIKA ecosystem provides expertise, partners, training and high-performance computing environments.
The partners in the AIKA ecosystem cover all stages of a data-based value chain – data collection, integration and preparation, data analysis and utilisation of artificial intelligence, visualisation, and utilisation of the outcomes in business.
AIKA provides companies with a free-of-charge baseline and maturity level assessment in the use of data.

EQUIPMENT AND ELECTRONICS TESTING SERVICES
The testing laboratory of Kajaani University of Applied Sciences provides companies with both individual tests and comprehensive testing and product development services. The testing laboratory’s service offering covers both unit- and device-level testing.
The EMC laboratory has comprehensive testing capabilities for emission and tolerance testing. Condition testing examines the reliability and suitability of a product under different operating conditions. Testing can be performed in respect of temperature, humidity, or both. For mechanical stress and vibration testing, KAMK has a six degrees of freedom motion platform and vibration testing equipment.

PRODUCTION TECHNOLOGY SERVICES
The Production Technology Laboratory of Kajaani University of Applied Sciences provides its customers with research services and development cooperation with the help of which companies can develop production technology, fault diagnostics, and quality control.
The Production Technology Laboratory carries out industry-specific studies and provides customer companies with assistance in choosing their development directions. The services of the Production Technology Laboratory include production automation (FMS), virtual production modelling (Quest), robot programming, and robot simulations.
