Circular economy
CEMIS aims to produce solutions that strengthen the capability of businesses and other operators to face changing environmental and market factors. CEMIS produces methods for the recovery of valuable materials and solutions for waste logistics and water management to reduce emissions of harmful substances and promote the utilisation of industrial side streams.
Kajaani University of Applied Sciences (KAMK) works to develop new circular economy solutions in a variety of ways. Expertise in experimental research focuses on areas such as processing and reuse of side streams and waste materials, examples of which include chemical recovery of metals from waste electrical and electronic equipment, i.e. plastics waste that contains significant amounts of metals.
Digital solutions for waste and water management and the related practical experiments are part of KAMK’s circular economy package. Digital solutions that improve the efficiency of waste management and management for runoff waters in industrial areas are an important area of development.
Senior R&D Expert Outi Laatikainen: Waste management is an essential part of the circular economy. IoT technology can be used to produce data for obtaining a better situational picture for waste fraction management and logistics planning.
Installation of remote monitoring sensors in waste containers and wells in the Hossa tourist area. The area provides a good pilot site for testing the reliability of data transfer.
MEASUREMENT OF CONTAMINANTS IN EFFLUENTS
Research at the University of Oulu’s Measurement Technology Unit (MITY) focuses especially on runoff waters and municipal and industrial effluents. The unit studies factors that impair the quality of water, such as microplastics and the chemical components they carry, in order to improve their traceability and reduce emissions.
VTT MIKES develops methods for measuring fluid flow and for assessing the uncertainty and reliability of measurements.
MEASUREMENT DATA FOR PROCESS OPTIMISATION
CEMIS offers its expertise in data processing and data analytics for real-time process and environmental measurements, and develops methods based on data analysis and artificial intelligence to optimise industrial processes and support maintenance.
In the management of measurement data, KAMK’s expertise covers the entire chain from measurement solutions to the management and processing of data, analysis, and presentation of data for utilisation. In equipment design, KAMK offers expertise in electronics design, device-oriented programming, and telecommunications solutions.
Both CSC and KAMK have strong expertise in data management, data analytics, machine learning, data visualisation, and management of real-time measurement data.
With the LUMI Euro HPC supercomputer located in Kajaani, the opportunities for utilising high-performance computing have also increased in modelling, simulation and analysis tasks related to industry that require computing capacity.
